The contemporary role of the pharmacist in the community is to ensure that patients receive optimal treatment.
There are four main fields of work for pharmacists:
Community Pharmacy where pharmacists are involved in:
- Prescribing medications
- Primary healthcare
- Health promotion
Hospital Pharmacy where pharmacists are involved in:
- Preparing and dispensing medications for outpatient clinics and inpatients, and compounding and assessing the quality of specialized dosage forms for use in the hospital setting.
Clinical Pharmacy, which includes pharmacists:
- Practicing their profession in the wards to ensure optimal drug therapy for patients by creating individualized patient plans and monitoring patient progress.
- Working in drug and poison information centers where their role is to provide information to other healthcare professionals to aid in therapeutic decisions.
Industrial Pharmacy where pharmacists are involved in:
- Manufacturing products, quality control, marketing pharmaceutical and medical products, and researching and developing new or improved products.
